Hi Prof. Lakoff,
I was wondering if you could suggest to me any books or articles on the topic
of indirectness and politeness in discourse. Possibly something you've written,
since I see that it is one of your areas of interest!
I am very curious to learn about the phenomenon of evasiveness in general; when
directness is more practical and when/why indirect forms are chosen. Anything
you could suggest on this topic would be great. I am Hoping
one day to study linguistics and discourse strategies at the graduate level
and in the meantime would like to do some independent reading on areas I find
interesting to learn more about the field. (My undergrad major was Comp. Lit.).
